Discontent of Consumerism
The only good things are new things. Especially shiny new things with all the latest features.
American artist and blogger Debbie Adams put Binky in the spotlight to give him the recognition he deserves for all the high-powered thinking he does. Deb’s original post of Binky In The Spotlight can be seen on her blog.

Shiny new things appeal to our inner Wombie
My inner Wombie still can’t afford that shiny new Harley yet
I want a shiny new Corvette!
I didn’t know you had an inner Wombie, Tony.
Yes it’s that inner part of me that yearns for shiny new things.
My mobile phone is 4 years old, yearn yearn…
Drawing tablet, yearn yearn…
Cold beer, yearn yearn…
I like old things. They’re comforting. And they remind me of myself.
WordPress plugins have been my downfall. Theme Forest is the devil but they have shiny plugins and themes. 🙁
At least most of WordPress themes and plugins are free.
Yeah, but they’re not as shiny.
You probably have to pay for those ones.
Oh yeah, my theme is paid for and a lot of plugins I use. But I’m done! Im’ don HEY Something shiny!
You actually paid for your theme?
Yes.
I just modified and adapted one to match the look of my main website.
So, are you saying you built yours?
I guess I did. Maybe I should sell the Wombanian Theme.
Shiiiiiiiny
And new!
The minute we buy something new and shiny it gets obsolete in no time at all
Maybe but I still want it!
I know you do. 🙂
I still didn’t get it though.
It just be his goal to get you all you want. 😉
I think his goal is to not get me anything I want!
Luckily you have your friends to get you things.
I couldn’t live without my friends like you!
At least we try to get for you the things you want.
And you always do a really good job of it!
I did that as a kid.
I want that Yoda.
No, you already have a Yoda.
But this one has a Brown Snake!
Some of you will get the reference. 😉
I think we all did that as kids. Though I don’t get the brown snake reference, unless you mean Clive’s snake.
No, the original Yoda action figure came with an orange snake and was replaced with a brown one. I’m looking at both of them right now. 😉
Okay, I didn’t know. And I didn’t know you were a Star Wars collector.
This scenario is quite familiar to employees at Apple Stores worldwide hahaha
I should go to the Apple store then!
Thank you for posting my art, Peter!
You’re welcome, Deb.
🙂
That’s right, it’s new and looks better! 😉
Yeah a lot better!
I always feel this way whenever I put another quarter in my piggy bank! – everyone is so special to me but I always want another? W.C.C.
I always want another one too! But I don’t usually get it!
It is hard to resist new and shiny. 🙂
I know I can’t!
I’m a sucker for shiny new books. But I need to read all the other ones I bought first!
I’d rather just buy new ones! They’re better!
And there are so many that do just this. Toss a perfectly good whatever for the newest model of something. I see that with phones a lot.
Have a terrific day. 🙂
Many people have to have the latest of everything, no matter how good what they already have is.
I’ll admit I do this too! Sigh….
New stuff is the best!
The consumers consumer.
I bet I could get a prize for that!
Want, need–big difference.
That’s what Chris always says!
There’s always a next new thing!
And I want it! Now!
Magpie shopping… only want things that shine.
They must be smart! I like shiny things too!
Well he does deserve a nice spotlight. 🙂 I think my youngest has consumerism. I’m working on that…
It you work on him enough, maybe you can catch it!
The shininess wears off eventually with anything we buy, Fraz. So sometimes it’s better to take good care of the old. 🙂
Btw, Binky looks great in Deb’s spotlight!
When the shininess wears off it’s time to buy a new one!
Thanks Lauren! 🙂
The shiny one is better and Fraz knows it 🙂
I know but it’s pretty hard to convince Chris of that!
Yes he is hard to talk round that’s for sure but I know if you keep at him morning, noon and night, eventually you will get what you want 🙂 Here have some vanilla ice cream with chocolate twig decorations while we move to the next phase 🙂
Yeah I’m pretty good at wearing him down! If I keep at it long enough he usually caves! And the ice cream will keep me going!
I have brought you some fabtastic wine gums straight out of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, they are the one’s that you can chew forever without losing any of the flavour 🙂
They’re my favorite kind! I love those!
This is awesome artwork by our very sweet friend Deb 🙂 Binky deserves lots of credit for his excellent work in science, mathematics, and astrophysics 🙂 He is one brainy Wombie that’s a fact 🙂
Yes, Deb did a very nice job on this one. I’m sure Binky likes it a lot, though he would be reticent to say so.
I didn’t know there’s a term for this. This happens a lot with mobile phone…the new one is slightly better than the old version
Companies are always improving things, even if they don’t need improving, to try to entice us to get the latest version. And it often works.
And who do the cleaning for those shiny thing…. or that is extra? It is amazing how Deb manage to paint shiny thing, she must be a super household expert cleaning!
Deb did make Binky look shinier than ever. Perhaps she used some magic sparkling paints.
So glad I do not fall for the newest, better version of the same thing I already had. I wait until they perfect it and get to keep it far longer with fewer headaches. 🙂
Companies don’t like that, though. They want you to buy every updated version, no matter how insignificant. Look, we added another useless feature!
One of my consulting practices is how to shop. I am a marketer’s nightmare. The flip side is how to invest the money you do not spend on useless “keeping up with the Joneses” gradu.
So much of the economy these days is based on wants, that if everyone followed your advice it would probably collapse. Our current rate of consumption is really not sustainable.
My way is the way to build economies. It is an alternate to war-driven economy.
We have proven 16 ways to Sunday consumer-driven economies collapse. Think about all the products which have gone belly-up after one season taking with them 100K employees and thousands of investors. The consumer economy is mostly supported by advertising, which I consider one of the most perverse incarnations of our time, followed by insurance (against losing your consumer product), the single most perverse.
Well I wouldn’t argue with you there. Insurance here is like legislated extortion. You can’t even use it for fear of the repercussions.
An sustainable economy based on producing long-lasting useful products is what we really need, though I doubt we will be getting it any time soon. Too much wealth is based on greed to let that happen.
