Introducing the Wombies
Today’s comic strip has been preempted to bring you this video from the Wombania archives. It’s pretty old, and the quality is suspect, but it does show the Wombies animated. Sort of.

Man, I can just see an entire toy line plus the cartoon. Good luck!
One day, maybe. Coming soon to a TV near you!
I wish there’d be a cartoon about wombies so much!
So do we!
The Wombies need to start a petition.
It’s like Awkward Family Photos expect wombats. I had no idea a group of wombats is called a wisdom!!! Ironic huh?
It’s hard to get them to stand still for anything. Other than chocolate.
Ironic? Wombats are wise! And Wombies are even wiser. Just ask Binky.
only takes a fat cigar and Binky looks like Groucho Marx
I never thought of that! Now Binky is going to have to start spouting wisecracks.
I love it.
They are very alive looking and fun to watch and although they are just standing there the detail of their movement captures their personality.
Thanks, Hjörtur. I tried to express their personalities in their subtle movements.
Wow…thats a cool video. The word wombies remind me of Breakfast on Pluto
Thanks, Novroz. As far as I know, none of the Wombies have had breakfast on Pluto, though Binky certainly would like to.
Can I say I am a little creeped out by the animated wombats.
No, you can’t say that. Sorry.
Quietly whistles to self.
I am impressed. I loved it. All my life I have wanted to see animated wombats. I can scratch that off my bucket list.
I’m glad to hear we’ve been able to fulfill one of your lifelong dreams. Seeing animated Wombies are among many people’s most sought after goals.
Awesome animation!
I’ve been meaning to ask what software is used to create Wombania, Mr. Marinacci?
I’ve done crude 3D architectural rendering using a program called VIZ, but certainly nothing on this level. It’s challenging enough for me to create flat surfaces – I have no idea how you go about mapping such complex shapes! Very impressive! 🙂
Thanks, Robert. I use Animation Master which uses patches rather than the traditional polygons of most 3D software. It makes modeling organic shapes relatively easy, though creating a character is still a rather daunting task as they have to have an internal skeleton which has to be associated with external skin patches for animation purposes. A lot of adjustments and muscle poses have to be created to get things to work properly.
I hadn’t heard of VIZ.
Interesting – thanks for the info!
Viz was Autodesk software that I believe has been discontinued. I think they’ve incorporated more 3D capability right into Autocad / other programs now.
You have some amazing 3D modeling skills, Binky – very impressive work! 🙂
Thanks, but the Wombies are relatively simple models, really.
They need voices! I need to hear Fraz say “Okay, I stood for the camera. When do I get payed?”!
Also, the copyright notice lasts less than a second, being preempted by the replay options before it can be read
Yeah, that’s what Fraz would say alright. Voices definitely would be nice, but the problem is twofold. First, I would need voice actors to record the voices, and second synchronizing the lips to the voice would be quite a task. So for now, they shall remain voiceless.
In the original video, the copyright notice stays up longer, so I’m not really sure what happened.
with the music and the way they are moving there heads I have the feeling that they are either going to attack or start saying we are here to help you, we are your friends.. creepy 🙂
The Wombies weren’t really trying to be creepy, but they have come for your chocolate and wine gums, so hand it over!
there cuteness is overpowering, i must comply 🙂
ps. I would buy a wombie 🙂
We’ll have to find a way to make clones of ourselves so we can sell ourselves without really selling ourselves.
interesting thought… or you could have wombie stuffed toys made that would be cool.. and they could say give me wine gums 🙂
Making stuffed/plush Wombies would be great, and making them say “Give me wine gums” would be even better.
Oh sure. Agent Moose can be creeped out by the fact that they look like they are going to eat me but I have to keep quiet..haha
Agent Moose had to surrender great quantities of chocolate and wine gums for the transgression, though.
My cat is in my lap right now and when Twink came on the screen there was a definite increase in the purring.
I hope that doesn’t mean that your cat views Twink as food.
Amazing creation.
Wish you luck for launch and success. 🙂
Thanks, Indrani. There isn’t really an eminent launch, though.
That’s pretty cool man.
Thanks, Jeremy. Glad you liked it.
Oh yeah dig watching animation. I’ve been dabbling in it for some time now. Just annoyed with the lenghty processes.
It definitely takes a lot of time and effort to make animation, no matter what method you use to make it.
I quite enjoyed that! Twink has that flirty look down pat 🙂 I almost expected Binky or Fraz to reach out for my chocolate bar.
Thanks, Faythe. If they could have, they would have tried to take your chocolate. That’s why you always need to keep it hidden around the Wombies.
I will have to keep some extra chocolate on hand when you wombies come to visit. Tho I do hope the sledding days are over for the season! I think you wombies could do a better job than that dumb ol’ groundhog!
Extra chocolate is always a good idea, whether or not we’ll be coming.
Yes, I think us Wombies would be much more reliable than the groundhogs, but they have a monopoly on the winter prediction routine, and I don’t think they’d appreciate us competing with them.
Excellent work Peter. Now they just have to work out how to get out of the computer then we’ll be in real trouble…
Thanks, Tony. If they break out of the computer, the Wombie invasion will be unstoppable. At least I hope so.
Sweet! I loved seeing the wombies moving, even if they were just wiggling their ears. I would totally buy a wombie to keep my platypus company.
Thanks, Colleen. I should probably post the other videos which have a bit more movement in them. I wonder how many platypuses would buy Wombies? That could be a vast hidden market.
They looked animated to me. I think you did a great job. Just my two cents.
Have a terrific day. 🙂
Thanks. I guess you could say they’re semi-animated. They probably need more sugar.
I’m just blown away by what computers can allow “ordinary” people like us to do. Weta Workshop will have to work hard to keep ahead of the game!
Ordinary people, and ordinary Wombies. They had better watch their backs, or the Wombies will take over. The gang seems to be on a world domination mood lately.
Cool! And nice music. 🙂
We spare no expense to bring you the best for our orchestral accompaniment.
They are so cute! I would love to have a whole set, please. 🙂
Hopefully one day we will be able to accommodate you!
And you did, twice! 🙂
And now your life will never be the same! As long as you keep them well-supplied with chocolate and wine gums, they shouldn’t give you too much trouble.
It has been the same since I got my first set.
Chocolate is the ticket for a good little Wombie. 😉
Thanks For the Wombie family! 🙂
You’re very welcome. They’re very lucky Wombies to be have been adopted by you.
